What is Nitrite?
Nitrite is a chemical made by good bacteria in your filter. These bacteria break down ammonia, a harmful waste from fish. You can’t see nitrite in the water, but it can harm fish if the levels are too high. Nitrite is later turned into nitrate, which is much safer for fish.

What is the Right Nitrite Level?
The best nitrite level is zero. Any amount of nitrite in your aquarium or pond can be harmful to fish.

What to Do if the Nitrite Level is Too High?

• If the nitrite level is between 0.25 and 0.5 mg/L, do a water change.
• For every 1 mg/L of nitrite, change 25% of the water.
• If the nitrite level is higher than this, change 50% of the water.
• Adding pond salt (at 0.01%) can help reduce nitrite’s harmful effects on fish.

How to Use the Nitrite Test Kit

1. Make sure the test tube is clean.
2. Fill the tube with 5 ml of water from your pond or aquarium.
3. Add 5 drops of Nitrite reagent to the sample.
4. Close the tube with the cap and shake well.
5. Wait 2 minutes, then compare the sample’s color to the chart provided.
   • A colorless sample means the nitrite level is zero.
   • Any pink color shows nitrite is present. Ignore any color changes after two minutes.

By testing regularly and acting quickly, you can keep your fish safe and healthy.
